Freshwater mermaid colony was accidentally discovered when a crab-trapper caught a foot-long mermaid that was trapped inside his sturdy bamboo cage.
From the oral account of Mickey Macatangay of Pasig City.
I was a small boy when this story happened. My fisherman neighbor had trapped a small mermaid from the river. It was slim human-like creature like the size of a Barbie doll. Its body was like that of a fish covered with gleaming white scales and its head has hair-like spines covering its whole head. He placed the mermaid inside a glass jar.
The fisherman told us, youngsters that was crowding his house, that when he raised his bamboo trap, a group of mermaids were clinging outside the trap. "They only jump onto the water after seeing me hauling the trap in mid-air," the man told us.
I saw the little mermaid looking at me wide-eyed and its scaly face seemed frightened at us. Then I pointed my finger closer to its position, it panicked and flexed its body many times, disturbing the water in the Aquarium jar.
The fisherman warned us not to disturbed it for he will return the mermaid to the river for he was forewarned that it will only bring misfortune. He told us that it loves to eats crushed clams and like the bubbles of the oxygen fed by the small hose in the water.
The next day the mermaid was gone. Our neighbor gossipers said that he sold it to a pet shop for a big amount.
Years later the fisherman who caught the mermaid vanished while fishing at the river. They said that the mermaid colony had drowned him.
